About Afluria®

Afluria® is an influenza vaccine that is available in thimerosal-free, prefilled syringes and multi-use vials containing thimerosal as a preservative. Afluria® was approved just in time for the 2007-2008 flu season.

Afluria® is distributed in the United States by CSL Biotherapies, the vaccine company of CSL Limited, and one of the few providers of flu vaccines in the world today. With 40 years of influenza vaccine manufacturing and distribution experience, CSL Limited has developed extensive expertise and plays a central role in helping to reduce the risk of flu epidemics in many countries. Being a reliable influenza vaccine supplier comes from not only our extensive expertise and knowledge, but also our relentless dedication to the patients we serve.

Afluria® Influenza Virus Vaccine is a sterile suspension prepared from influenza virus, which is propagated in the allantoic fluid of embryonic chicken eggs. Following harvest, the virus is purified in a sucrose density gradient using a continous flow zonal centrifuge. The purified virus is inactivated with beta propiolactone, and the virus particles are disrupted using sodium taurdeoxycholate to produce a "split virion." The disrupted virus is further purified and suspended in a phosphate-buffered isotonic solution.

A purified, inactivated, split virion influenza vaccine, the vaccine is made by “splitting” the purified, inactivated, whole virus to form fragments. This process reduces the number of adverse events experienced with whole virus vaccines, yet leaves the surface antigens and structural proteins in their original antigenic form.
